SITA today announces that it has appointed Martin Smillie as VP of the Communications & Data Exchange Portfolio. Smillie will be responsible for delivering next-generation solutions that harness the potential of the cloud, data, IoT, SDN, and APIs, helping the air transport industry automate and optimize their communications and data exchange operations.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SITA research shows most airlines and airports are investing more in in-house virtual and remote IT services allowing employees to work in a more agile and effective way while speeding up communications with passengers. Almost three-quarters of airports and airlines will continue to invest in data exchange, cloud services, and business intelligence to accelerate their digital airport processes.

SITA is well positioned to meet this demand, already facilitating the exchange of 60% of all data between airlines, airports and governments as well as providing the vital communication backbone to the wider industry.

David Lavorel, CEO Airports and Borders at SITA, said: “Given this rapidly evolving demand from the industry, a key focus at SITA is to accelerate the development of new solutions that allow SITA to continue to lead the market. We need to help our customers become more efficient and better able to serve their passengers. Given the depth of his experience, I am convinced that Martin will steer this core part of our business to continued success, securing our leadership as a trusted and innovative partner.”

Smillie brings significant experience and knowledge to SITA, joining SITA from TCD Group in Copenhagen, where he was Director Group Security. He has over 25 years of experience in the IT and Telecomm industry, having worked in-house and as a consultant for organizations like Huawei, Verizon, and BT Global Services.
