SITA Lab
A concept-evaluation system open to employees, customers and partners in the ATI
Overview
SITA Lab is a world-class facility for strategic technology research with a goal to drive innovation for the air transport industry (ATI), working both independently and in partnership with others.
Mandate & Objectives
Within SITA, the SITA Lab intends to:
- Stimulate "Technology Innovation" for SITA
- Bring "Emerging Technologies" into SITA's portfolio
- Incubate new product / technology ideas
- Fuel and moderate SITA's ideation process
Within the ATI, the SITA Lab intends to:
- Work with SITA partners, suppliers and customers to build an "Innovation ATI Ecosystem"
- Provide expertise around co-ideation and co-innovation
Engagement Model
Work with SITA Lab for co-innovation on a proof of concept, prototype and pilot, or jointly investigate new technologies.
Work with SITA Lab for ideation.
- Jointly organize and moderate "think tank" sessions on specific business issues
- Generate, capture and filter ideas
- Evaluate and prioritize ideas
- Use SITA subject-matter experts to translate ideas into a proof of concept, prototype or pilot
Areas of Focus
SITA has identified key emerging trends and major technological changes that will have significant affects on the ATI and our clients.
Passenger Mobility
Despite the challenges, mobility done right will allow passengers to proactively manage their travel experience on the move, rather than from a fixed location. It will also offer airports and airlines new opportunities to inform, empower, serve and sell to their customers.
SITA Lab has continued its research and development of SITA Travel, a mobile application designed for smart phones, providing concierge-style services. The SITA Travel mobile application is aware of the user's location and itinerary, thus making intelligent decisions based on the user's individual needs.
Predictive Analytics
Predictive analytics encompass a variety of techniques, from statistics to data mining, that allow predictions of future events based on careful analysis of current and historical data from the ATI.
SITA Lab programme:
- Builds predictive models to exploit patterns found in airline and airport historical and transactional data
- Identifies risks and opportunities
- Guides airline- and airport operations to optimize decision making
Grid Technologies
Applying several computers simultaneously to solve a single problem often leads to a better solution faster. This is especially true of a technical problem that requires a great number of computer processing cycles or access to large amounts of data.
SITA Lab has been applying grid computing to numerous internal projects in order to learn how to divide and apportion pieces of a program among many computers - up to several thousand. We have initiated small projects confined to a network of computer workstations within SITA, as well as large projects involving public collaboration across many partners and networks.
