Baggage Report 2013

Overall rates down 1.78% and transfer mishandling down 9%

The ninth annual SITA Baggage Report shows a continued improvement in the industry's mishandling rates. In 2012, there were 8.83 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, a 44.5% drop over the last six years.

One area the industry is focusing on is improving baggage transfers between flights. This is traditionally a 'pinch point' in the baggage handling process and the leading cause of delay. Last year, mishandled transfer bags were down 9% from 2011.
