BagManager

Reducing mishandled bag costs for airlines

In 2009, 25 million bags were mishandled, costing the air transport industry US$ 2.5 billion in direct costs alone.  The 2009 figures reflect the effects of fewer passengers travelling and increasing charges for checked bags.

Today, the air transport industry (ATI) is recovering stronger and faster than anyone predicted. But with passenger growth and baggage fees come added pressures to baggage systems, increased passenger expectations, and the increased potential for mishandled baggage.

Airlines need to track and trace bags to ensure they get on the correct flights with their owners.

SITA's BagManager provides a comprehensive baggage management application, suitable for use by airports, airlines and handling agents that provides industry leading functionality in terms of how users load, reconcile, track, trace and manage their baggage operations. Proven in daily worldwide use at airports large and small, BagManager continues to grow and improve, meeting changing industry standards and a diverse variety of operational scenarios.

BagManager is a part of SITA's integrated baggage portfolio, comprising industry leading applications for bag message distribution, fallback tag printing and worldwide mishandled baggage tracing.

Overview

BagManager tracks the movement of baggage from check-in to flight departure, monitoring baggage from airport to airport. It also provides baggage handlers with real-time information on baggage status and helps them resolve baggage issues.

BagManager also:

  • Ensures the right bag travels on the right flight – the same flight as the bag owner
  • Identifies and unloads baggage of passengers who fail to board the flight
  • Reduces push-back delays and associated airport charges by pointing staff directly to the bag needing offloading
  • Manages baggage handing within an airport and across multiple airports
  • Provides real-time baggage management
  • Conforms to ICAO’s Annex 17-security requirement
  • Redirects bags that missed a flight and produces a new tag, then sends a message to WorldTracer and other systems

At airport check-in, the departure control system issues a bar-coded tag for each passenger’s bag. This bar code is transmitted to BagManager and is tracked around the airport and throughout the airline’s network.
