IT Budgets are stabilising
In line with the economic recovery, airline IT & T budgets are slowly stabilising. Respondents of this year's survey confirmed that their operating IT & T spend as a percentage of airline revenues remained at 1.8% for 2010, but there are significant regional differences.
The IT spend outlook for 2011 among airlines is positive, with a clear sign of rising business confidence globally. 56% of the respondents expect an increase in IT spend in 2011 with only 10% expecting a decrease.
Passenger Operation
Airlines continue to migrate passengers to a multi channel self-service check-in environment away from the traditional agent led check-in facilities. Increasingly, priority is given to deploying Internet/mobile check-in options initially. The number of airlines with web capability is currently 65%, forecasted to rise to 93% by 2013 while kiosk capability is forecast to rise from 56% to 87% in the same timeframe.
Mobile phone services will play an important role in the evolution of self-service technologies, evolving from a passenger communication-focused channel to a more interaction/ transaction driven interface to the passenger. Airlines expect just above 12% of their passengers using mobile phones to check-in by 2013, up from only 2% today.
Travel Distribution
Airlines continue to seek an increase in tickets sold via directly owned distribution channels and a reduction in the level of tickets sold through GDS providers. Airlines will see the average number of tickets sold through their own direct sales channels rise from 25.8% today to 37.9% by 2013, projecting distribution via GDS providers to fall from 50.4% today to 41.4% in the same time. Airlines plan to introduce additional website functionalities and introduce new web based services to drive
this transition further.
Airlines also started to explore opportunities to use the mobile phone as a new sales channel. Airlines capability to sell tickets through mobile phones are set to rise from 18% today to 70% of all airlines by 2013.
