FAQs

SITA Smart PathTM provides airlines and airports the most comprehensive whole journey approach to identity management in travel. Your face IS your boarding pass. More than 3 million travelers have already experienced SITA Smart PathTM in more than 20 airports around the world.

On the Way, Not in the Way. How Smart PathTM works:

SmartPath process

As part of the airline check-in process (either via mobile or at a check-in kiosk), the traveler is able to easily enroll and verify his identity information. Then, as the traveler moves through the airport to self-bag drop, security, lounge, or boarding, s/he simply steps up to the camera to verify her/his identity, typically in 5-seconds or less, and is able to proceed at near walking pace with no further manual document-checks required.

SITA has worked with APEX to simulate this process for attendees of APEX TECH 2020. As attendees register for the event, they will have the opportunity to enroll in Smart PathTM  in the same fashion as travelers embarking on their travel journey. When entering the conference, they will simply step up to the camera where a photo will be captured and compared against the enrollment record, verifying identity, registration status, and granting access to the event.

FAQ

Q: How will Smart PathTM  work at APEX?

On arrival at the APEX event, you will find a SITA kiosk and personnel at the registration desk. When picking up your badge, you will be able to enroll in SITA Smart PathTM , allowing you to experience the airport process, but instead using facial-recognition to manage event access.

To enroll, at the kiosk, you will: check-in for your (simulated) flight and/or scan your boarding pass. Next, insert your passport into the reader and consent to a photo capture. This creates a “single travel token” which is stored in the local system database for use at the event.

Now, each time you enter the conference room, the SITA FacePod at the event entrance will capture a new photo and compare it against the original stored photo. A green checkmark means the match has confirmed; a red X means the process did not complete successfully and you must see an agent for assistance.

Q: Why do I need to bring my passport?

In air travel today, document checks are largely a manual process: at the check-in counter, an airline agent must check your ID, check your reservation record, make sure the name matches, make sure you’re not flagged on a watch-list, make sure you have the right visa (if required), and THEN is allowed to issue your boarding pass or accept your checked-in luggage.

This process is designed to provide the highest level of identity assurance and protect the safety and security of our airports, ensuring airside access is only granted after appropriate vetting of traveler identity.

Biometric-enabled self-service solutions rely upon the available of a source record for matching and comparison, that provide reliable proof of a person’s authenticated identity information. Today, only the e-Chip passport offers a standardized, machine-readable document format that allows governments to securely store signed, authenticated identity data and information for its citizens in a secure manner that prohibits tampering and forgery.

SITA Smart PathTM  kiosks rely upon the highest level of assurance to confirm traveler identity in order to offer a secure, automated process for document checks and identity verification: the e-chip is decrypted and the stored photo is used to provide a baseline for initial matching and creation of the enrollment record.

In future, as technology continues to advance, additional options will be available.

Q: What happens to my data?

When you opt-in, certain information will be stored in the local Smart PathTM  system for the purposes of facilitating your Smart PathTM  experience. This may include passport data and a photograph.

This information will not be used for any other purpose, will not be shared with SITA or APEX TECH, will only be used within the facility to support the demo purposes, and will not be retained by SITA or APEX.
