Americas 2016 review

In early December a team of SITA staff spent a volunteer day inspecting, sorting and packing groceries at the Atlanta Community Food Bank . They distribute donated grocery products to more than 600 nonprofit partner agencies supporting families in the metropolitan Atlanta area.

In October the SITA Veterans Employee Resource Group (ERG) sponsored a week of recognition and a “Wear RED Day”. The acronym RED stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed” in honor of military service members serving away from home. Through “Wear RED Day” efforts through the year,  SITA Atlanta raised over US$1,700 for the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport USO.

In July a SITA team from our Atlanta office headed to the Must Ministries warehouse donation and distribution center in Kennesaw, Georgia. They helped sort food and clothes donations to support families, individuals and children in need within the Atlanta metro area.

What an amazing day they had “Going Red with Randy” in Atlanta the first week of February 2016. More than 75 of our staff turned up in red and raised over $550 for the American Heart Association. As part of the Going Red event, there was a draw for lunch with our Americas President, Randy Pizzi. A big congratulations to the winners.

Ten SITA Montreal employees raced up 41 flights of stairs in a downtown high-rise as part of this year’s Centraide fundraising campaign. The proceeds of the sponsored race, a waffle sale and direct online donations totaled 839 CAD (US$625). They went towards helping young children attend a specialist-led early childhood stimulation workshop to prepare for kindergarten.

This year’s contribution to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) Run for the Cure event  was the highest total to date at just over 1,000 CAD (US$765). CBCF invests these dollars in the most promising breast cancer research that is leading the way in prevention, diagnosis , treatment and care.

On 22 April 2016, staff in Montreal celebrated Earth Day 2016 with some help from local green organization, Éco-Quartier Peter-McGill. Following an informative presentation about recycling and a discussion on how to create better awareness and practices in the office, participants were treated to a healthy snack of fruits and vegetables.

Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo

A huge collection of toys and donations at the SITA Rio office joined many others to be distributed in a special Christmas Party for children living on the former landfill site, Jd. Gramacho.  Though the landfill closed in June 2012, more than 500 families of "pickers" – “catadores” in Portuguese – live there. They survive by sorting through the garbage to find recyclables. The toy collection and party was organized by local NGO “Corrente pelo Bem” to give the children of these families hope at Christmas.

15 SITA employees from two of our offices in Brazil laced up their jogging shoes and joined this year's Run and Walk against Breast Cancer on 22 May in Rio de Janeiro and 12 June in São Paulo. The run was organized in support of the Brazilian Institute for Cancer Control (IBCC) "Fashion Targets Breast Cancer" campaign to alert women about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. In total they raised a terrific 975 BRL (US$267) for the fight against breast cancer.

This year our Vancouver office joined the 20th edition of National Denim Day for breast cancer awareness in honor of Mother's Day on 10 May. Run by the Cure Foundation, the annual event contributes invaluable funding towards breast cancer education and research. SITA Vancouver staff were pleased to wear jeans in support of the campaign and contribute a donation of CAD$170 (US$130) towards a breast cancer cure.
