SITA named Aircraft Communications Service Provider for MUACC
On December 30, 2008, EUROCONTROL formally awarded SITA the ATN/VDLm2 Communication Service contract for the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUACC). The service will enable the exchange of CPDLC messages over a VDL Mode 2 infrastructure between MUACC and suitably equipped aircraft within its airspace.
MUACC is the first and, so far, only European ATC centre where the CPDLC application is in operation over ATN/VDLm2 air/ground technology. The Maastricht Centre played a key role in validating CPDLC over ATN/VDLm2 during the PETAL trials undertaken by EUROCONTROL in the early 2000s. The CPDLC operational status of the Maastricht Centre is a key element in the Link 2000+ Programme undertaken by EUROCONTROL to foster deployment of ATN/VDLm2 in Europe.
SITA's selection as the data link service provider for MUACC follows the European Commission Single European Sky Committee's recent adoption of the Data Link Services
Implementation Rule. This mandates EU ANSPs and airspace users to be equipped with the necessary skills, systems and services to introduce operational CPDLC services from 2013 in the Western part of Europe, with all remaining EU States to follow by 2015.
