Eyjafjallajokull has been very costly for the aviation industry. The latest estimate from Siim Kallas, the EU’s new Transport Commissioner, is that the cost to the industry will be somewhere between €1.5bn and €2.5bn, and that is assuming there is no further disruption. Clearly the impact is wider than just to the industry: over 100,000 flights were cancelled and many people were stranded. I was lucky to be stranded in South Africa for only eight days – some people couldn’t get home for weeks and at the time of writing, the ash cloud is still causing uncertainty.
