Although we may not feel it yet, things are getting a little better. Some of the major economies around the world have stabilized and have actually reported small growth. Passenger and cargo numbers are slowly moving up from their low points earlier this year. Although financial data only reflects the hard times of the first two quarters, we are slowly (it seems to be never fast enough) rebounding.
Richard Branson once said that if you want to manage a business you need to make sure that you cover the downside. However, we should not forget that the economic cycles have become shorter and the downside comes and goes quickly and the upside is just around the corner. IT and technology can obviously help in ensuring that, as the markets move quickly, you are able to stay on top.
At the same time, one key theme I keep returning to is: the ATI can best tackle issues and thrive through collaboration. When we all work together, we have a much better opportunity to shape the industry's destiny -- for the better. Be it in introduction of self-service around the region or environmental programs. Both items have high priority on SITA's agenda and in the business plans and we have had a number of recent successes in the two areas.
