Global Airline IT Security Survey 2008

How are airlines managing security challenges?

For airlines and airport operators, security dictates operational and commercial success because of the air transport industry's exposure to security risks at all levels. Yet security procedures can make processes more complex and time-consuming.

How are airlines and their security teams managing? Are they delivering secure services in a fast and efficient manner?

The SITA Global Airline IT Security Survey provides an insight into information technology (IT) security trends within airlines.

Key Global Airline IT Security Survey findings

In recent years, security thinking in the air transport industry (ATI) has required significant review, driven by three predominant factors:

  • Increased reliance on internet protocol (IP) orientated technology infrastructure
  • Dynamic customer access to booking and flight processes
  • Increased capacity demands on conventional airline and airport infrastructure

Security in the ATI holds a unique position of influence on strategic development.

Security, and specifically IT security, is shaping executive decision-making across sectors.

  • Review cycles for security planning remain consistent at once every seven months, on average
  • The presence of dedicated security management teams within airlines has increased from 55 percent in 2006 to 63 percent in 2007
  • Top two concerns for airlines in 2007: “Evaluating network vulnerabilities” and “securing IP-based networks”
  • 83 percent of the research sample stated that the pressure to respond to security threats is increasing within their respective organizations
  • Outsourcing − 18 percent of respondents manage all IT security in-house in 2007, against 39 percent in 2006
