Today, we’re the only global provider of IT and communication services to the air transport industry that’s owned entirely by industry members. Our 450 or so members include airlines, airports and other air transport industry organizations around the world.
In the early 1990s, we began operations in Switzerland and over the past two decades we have developed a significant presence. The SITA Group now employs nearly 300 staff at sites in Geneva and Zurich, including its subsidiary OnAir and SITA Bureau Services.
Since 1992, SITA’s not-for-profit co-operative (SITA SC) has been recognized by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs as a quasi-intergovernmental organization. This co-operative organization fulfills an important role for air travel by providing services to airlines and airports throughout the world. This includes developing countries where services might not be viable on a purely commercial basis. Today, 95% of all international destinations are connected by SITA's extensive network; 13,500 air transport sites are connected by SITA VPN networks and 100 million messages are carried between airlines, airports, government regulators, suppliers and partners by SITA Message services each day.
The SITA Group also has a separate global commercial for-profit division (SITA NV), which provides IT and application services.
As one of the most internationally diverse companies, our services span 200 countries and territories. Geneva's central geographic position provides a natural base for SITA in Switzerland, as does the location of 35 other major international organizations operating in the city, including air transport and telecommunications organizations such as IATA and ITU. This provides a large pool of skilled, multilingual staff with industry knowledge, a strong work ethic and international and multi-cultural experience.
Within Switzerland, we provide critical communications and applications to more than 70 Swiss-based air transport companies and international organizations, including Geneva Airport, Swiss International Airlines, Swissport, Skyguide and a number of United Nations agencies.
SITA and the local community
We support communities by encouraging employees to take volunteer days and participate in local projects. In December 2012, Geneva authorities awarded SITA the Eco-label for "Tri et dechet, and Energie" for its efforts in reducing its energy consumption and its recycling activities.
